Hey Family,
I have a love-hate relationship with poetry. Sometimes, and much more often than I’d like, reading poetry makes me feel like I’m on the outside of an inside joke. However, it can also help me see the world in a new way, or expresses feelings that I thought were beyond words, or even just put a smile on my face. I want to write poetry that will do those things for others, and the best way to develop a skill is to practice it. So for this week, my challenge is to join me in writing a poem. There’s no distinct rules of length, rhyme, or verse; just write whatever your heart tells you to. If you need any guidance, here is a list of prompts for writing poetry and a list of poetic forms. Also, here’s some inspiration from the opening lines of Seamus Heaney’s “Digging”:
Between my finger and my thumb,
My squat pen rests; snug as a gun.
I don’t think there’s a more badass way to describe a poet sitting down to write. Anyway, feel free to use whatever ideas, emotions, or images your poem evokes as the photo of the reflection post. I hope you have a great week and enjoy the writing process!
Love you,
Chase
