Hey Alex!
It was great seeing you on Thanksgiving; I’ll be sure to post some photos of our festivities later this week. I’m back at Augie and getting prepared for classes, but I’d much rather sleep in than go to school tomorrow. I’ve been feeling pretty exhausted lately, so it’s reassuring that this will be a pretty calm week; I’ll just have to keep in mind that winter break is only three school weeks away.
From your last post, it sounds like I’m not the only one who’s busy, what do you have coming up after the staff party? I hope everything goes well! A Sand County Almanac also looks like a really cool read, I’ll have to check that out sometime.
For this weekly challenge, I read Junot Diaz’s The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, which tells a story of a Dominican youth who is obsessed with all things science fiction. I really enjoy the book because it has a lot of references to nerd-dom that I grew up with like superhero comics and sci-fi movies, but also includes a lot of Dominican culture that was completely new to me.
Oscar Wao’s culture is expressed through tales about the history of the Dominican Republic, explanations of Dominican habits, and a fair amount of Spanish interspersed throughout the story. Like you, I’m only about a third of the way through my book, but I feel like it has already helped me to understand the Dominican Republic as a unique country rather than just simply another piece of South America.
I hope you have fun at your staff party!
Love you,
Chase
